Western Landscapes

12 Nights

Los Angeles, CA

Los Angeles is the starting point for this tour and after passing through Palm Springs en route to Phoenix, the adventure really begins. In the next days there are the Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, captured so often on film and photograph, and Bryce Canyon. In one way there is a brief respite from the landscapes with time in Las Vegas. In another way, Las Vegas, as a 24/7 city, offers no respite at all. It is then off through Death Valley to a region well-known during the Gold Rush and into Yosemite National Park. While that brings to a close one part of the adventure, few will ever be disappointed by the City of San Francisco and its many famous landmarks. There is the Golden Gate, Alcatraz and Union Square. You can visit California’s famous wine are, Napa Valley but then it is time to head south. The road running parallel with the Pacific down to Los Angeles offers many magnificent views and is an excellent way to finish a holiday full of stunning experiences.

Highlights

  • Los Angeles is evidence that the USA is a land of opportunity. Beverley Hills, Malibu and Santa Monica are just three of its wealthy districts while film goes can enjoy a studio visit while there.
  • Phoenix’s climate is sun and more sun. Despite it having little rain, the city has no water shortages as evidenced by its golf courses. Desert landscape and vegetation contrast with California.
  • Grand Canyon on the Colorado is a hugely popular tourist destination with colourful rocks and sculptures as far as the eye can see. A short helicopter trip will bring it even closer.
  • Monument Valley with its huge sandstone buttes reaching into the sky from the valley floor has been used by many film directors in their Western movies. You remember when you see it.
  • The 4- mile- long Strip in Las Vegas is 24/7. Its growth dates back to the Depression and the relaxation of Nevada’s gambling laws but today it offers great entertainment as well as casinos.
  • Yosemite is in California’s Sierra Nevada. It is wonderful natural environment with an infrastructure to cater for its many annual visitors. The Sequoias alone make a visit worthwhile.
  •  San Francisco was the home of the ‘’Flower Children’’ in the 1960s but its history also includes the Gold Rush, the infamous Alcatraz Prison, closed in the 1960s and the Golden Gate Bridge.
  • The California Coastal Highway could be a holiday on its own. Carmel where Clint Eastwood was mayor and Monterey are just two of the popular stops on the road linking San Francisco and LA.
